Description

Silkies are gentle, distinctive bantam chickens known for their soft, fluffy plumage, feathered legs, dark skin, and wonderfully calm personalities. Their unusual feathers lack the tiny hooks found in ordinary chicken feathers, giving them their famous cloud-like appearance.

Our free range silkies are raised on the homestead in a variety of mixed colours. They make charming garden companions and are generally quieter and more docile than many standard chicken breeds. Their friendly nature makes them popular with families, hobby keepers, and anyone looking for a smaller ornamental chicken with plenty of character.

Silkie hens are also renowned for becoming broody and making attentive mothers. On our homestead, we sometimes use them as tiny feathered incubators for quail eggs. Their patient nature and strong maternal instincts allow them to sit on and hatch small batches naturally, although each hen’s temperament and reliability can differ.

Perfect For
Family and hobby flocks
Smaller homesteads and gardens
Natural incubation and brooding
Hatching quail or bantam eggs
Ornamental and mixed-colour flocks
Keepers wanting calm, personable chickens

Silkies need secure, dry housing because their soft feathers do not repel rain as effectively as ordinary chicken plumage. They also benefit from protection against predators and careful introductions to larger or more assertive chickens.
