Description

Evening primrose, Oenothera biennis, is a fascinating plant with cheerful yellow flowers that famously open towards the evening.

The plant is better known today for evening primrose oil, which is produced commercially from its seeds. However, parts of Oenothera biennis also have a history of food use, including young roots and shoots. A current South African seed listing describes the young roots as edible with a peppery flavour and the young shoots as suitable for salads.

For Flying Goose, though, I would mainly sell this as an interesting flowering garden plant and seed product rather than trying to make homemade evening primrose oil.

A little tip: The flowers open in the evening, making this a particularly lovely plant near a stoep or outdoor sitting area.

Tammy’s tip: This is definitely a Lucky Packet ingredient. Nobody has ever angrily complained that their grocery shop failed to contain enough evening primrose.
